Lavish musical productions, screened films and concerts have long been the types of entertainment that the Dominion has specialised in.  Its bulky structure is situated on the busy junction of Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Street and has several times been used exclusively as a cinema.  The site itself has a chequered, unusual history.  Fittingly it was formerly an entertainment site of a show tent and funfair, but long before that in the 12th Century the St Giles Leper Hospital had stood there.  In the early 1800s it was the site of a brewery, and bizarrely, in 1814 a 22-foot vat of ale burst and literally drowned eight people in alcohol.

Screenings of musical films The Sound Of Music and South Pacific ran for lengthy periods in the 1950s and 60s, and more recently a particularly big hit for the Dominion was Time (1986).  It was then one of the most expensive staged musicals ever and starred Cliff Richard and a hologram of Laurence Olivier!  Since then the musical Grease (1993 to 1996) and the current Queen rock musical We Will Rock You have been the theatre’s longest running hits.
