Altogether more ‘civil’ affair for parking wardens
NEW uniforms could be just the ticket for the borough’s parking attendants as they have received a Robocop-style makeover.
From this week “parking attendants” will be no more – to be replaced by the impressively named Civil Enforcement Officers (CEOs) under the new Traffic Management Act.
The new title comes with new responsibilities – but don’t rip up your unpaid fines just yet because they will continue to enforce parking. As the council puts it, CEOs will become the “eyes and ears” of the community.
They will also sport a swanky new uniform, eschewing the yellow fluorescent vest and peaked hat for navy blue bomber jackets and baseball caps.
As well as doling out parking tickets, CEOs will be on hand to assist the public with anti-social behaviour, report suspicious activity, and make a note of vehicles without tax discs.
Westminster Council’s director of parking Alastair Gilchrist said: “Our CEOs already carry out valuable work keeping Westminster moving, but the Act means we will expand their role to become the new eyes and ears of the council and they will play an increasingly important role supporting the community in the heart of the capital.
“The introduction of the CEO is simply recognising how the role of the parking attendant has transformed over the years and attendants in Westminster are an example of how the role has evolved from enforcing parking to now also supporting the community.”
The new Act, which replaces the Road Traffic Act 1991, also allows CEOs to issue parking fines by post if they are unable to fix a ticket to a car. |
